Crossroads Publishing Presents the Sculpture and Drawings of Wanda Rea

About Clay Sculpture

Each of these original clay sculptures are one-of-a-kind works of art. Months of study and design go into each original. Often the work has to be completed in sections and assembled just before firing and sometimes assembled after.

The original work for reproduction of Neptune's Nymph was sculpted in two parts. The mermaid was completed and fired separately from the coral and rock base.

Works that are to be molded and cast as limited editions often have to be sculpted and fired in separate parts and the original may not survive the process at all.

These original clay sculptures are made from a product called Super Sculpey®, a home-fired polymer modeling compound. They are somewhat fragile at the smallest parts of their construction, for instance, animal's ears or the tips of tails, approximately the strength of fine porcelain.

After the design and planning phases of the creation, a wire armature is designed, to support and strengthen the work. The clay is added, shaped, and detailed. When all details are completed the sculpture is baked, sanded and hand smoothed.

Next several coats of acrylic are applied in a dry-brush painting technique and special sealants are applied to give appropriate effects and protection.

All reasonable efforts, including a wire armature base for their construction, have been made to give added support and strength. Under gentle handling conditions they should last many years. The buyer takes all responsibility for any breakage after purchase and delivery. Appropriate shipping insurance is added to the shipping of each sculpture.
